Sdma in Mobile Radio Systems: Capacity Enhancement in Gsm & Is-95

The Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) technique allows to increase the capacity of a mobile cellular system, exploiting the users spatial separation.This technique can be integrated with conventional access techniques, such as FDMA, TDMA and CDMA; therefore it can be used in all the mobile systems currently operated or to be introduced in the future. In this paper the SDMA technique is deeply analysed. It also evaluates the capacity increase obtainable with SDMA applied to GSM and to a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) system, based on Qualcomm IS-95 standard.
